Welcome to thisgingertravels the blog!
Thank you to everyone who is here from Instagram. It’s been just over two weeks since I set up @thisgingertravels and I’ve somehow managed to convince 1000 of you to follow me, so thank you.
I thought I would start by saying hello and introducing myself:
I’m Amy, I’m 23 and I’m from Surrey, UK.
I have lived in England all my life, but luckily my parents have a love for travelling, so I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world from a young age. As a kid I went on cruises to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Central America, I went to South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Cape Verde, the Maldives, countless parts of Europe and more. My parents have a love for the sea so I was always encourage to snorkel and appreciate marine life, something that has probably encouraged my new found love of diving! I was also lucky enough to do a lot of youth theatre as a kid, which led to me visiting Edinburgh, Scotland every year since the age of 16 for the incredible Fringe Festival.
From 18 onwards, I have done tonnes of travelling off my own back. On my gap year I spent 3 months in Australia and New Zealand. Throughout university I spent months studying and working in order to save up to travel during the holidays. I have visited the Paris, Prague, Vienna, Ljubljana, Budapest, Gran Canaria, Lake Garda, Venice, Nuremberg, Stockholm (where my brother lived for 5 years), Spain, Cyprus, Malaysia, Bali, and Mozambique! I have been extremely lucky to be able to visit so many incredible places, but I cannot wait to keep expanding the list.
I graduated from the University of Exeter last year (2019) with a degree in Drama and I have worked on and off in hospitality for the past 9 years, mainly in pubs and bars. Like most 23 year olds, after graduation a career, stability and settling down was the route I was pushed towards. However, I decided that I would rather have a bit more fun whilst I still can. I had the intention of spending 2020 travelling in Africa and then seeing where I ended up. This was brought to a holt only 3 weeks in due to Covid-19, as I’m sure a lot of people can empathise with. I came back to lockdown and started a new job to save some more money towards travelling. I’m currently also studying for a TEFL, with the hope that will let me travel whilst sustaining a job, and I am doing a dive masters in September to pursue my love of the ocean and diving some more.
Now things are opening up again it’s time for me to jet off again. The next trip is already booked and I can’t wait to get back out into the world again.
If you’d like to know anything else about me, try checking out my About Me page!
So, enough about me. More about THIS BLOG!
Why are you blogging?
I set up this blog to share my travel experiences past, present and future. I have seen so many great blogs online and done so many wonderful things whilst abroad due to reading blogs from people like me, so I thought: ‘why not be one of those people?’ Hopefully, you’ll see things you find interesting, find things helpful or maybe even try something new due to my posts.
What sort of content can we expect to see?
This one is still slightly up in the air. After this introductory post I’ve got a few things lined up to do with my most recent trip and some other recent trips away, however I also want to post content like eco-friendly, sustainable travel advice, packing lists, every day travel advice, cool products for sustrainable travel, etc. So, expect a whole range! I will always listen; if you want more or less of something just get in contact on Instagram.
How often will you be posting?
As often as I can. I have a backlog of things to talk about from the past five years, and hopefully there will be plenty more to post about coming up so I’ll be spoilt for choice with content once September rolls around! I will be aiming for weekly, maybe more, maybe less, but that’s the aim.
What are your big passions (apart from travel)?
As you might’ve already noticed, I love scuba diving. I only did my first dive a year ago, and I’m now on my way to doing my dive masters! I am a big advocate of ocean conservation and would love to one day use my diving to benefit this.
I’m a huge foodie, and although I’m gluten and dairy intolerant and vegetarian, I love trying cuisine from all over the world.
I am also a huge advocate of eco-awareness. I try not to buy fast fashion, I am very aware of my carbon footprint as someone who travels so much, I do not eat meat, I avoid plastic like the plague, and always love hearing about new ways to improve my impact on the planet. I am also a brand ambassador for A Good Company who make wonderful sustainable stationary, phone cases, art supplies and more. They even carbon offset all their shipping. You can get 10% off by using the code ‘thisgingertravels’ at the checkout.
I also love reading and will read anything from fiction, to non fiction, to blogs, to the news. You can bet wherever I travel I’ve got my kindle in my bag.
And that’s the start! I hope you’ll join me for more as my journey goes on. If there’s ever anything you want to hear about or any questions you have you can visit the Contact Me page. I love hearing from like minded people and always open to making friends.
Enjoy the blog and have a look around!
